Uber: Transportation Option for Seniors
Public transportation has come a long way in the past few years. Typically, if you want to go somewhere but don’t have a car or license you only have a few options. Either you ask family or friends for a ride, take the bus, or maybe if your city is big and populated enough, you have access to a train or subway. This may not be a large concern for most, but for aging adults, transportation can be an everyday struggle.
While some facilities like Westminster Village in West Lafayette, Indiana already provide scheduled transportation for residents, other members of the elderly community have often struggled with safe travel plans. Luckily, new trends in public transportation make travel troubles a thing of the past.
How to set up and use Uber
Uber drove on to the scene in 2009 with an entirely new idea in mind- your neighbors, peers, and acquaintances can take you anywhere you need to be just by the push of a button! No bus passes, cash only transactions, or scheduled pickups necessary! They come right to you at your home or wherever you happen to be. It sounds great doesn’t it? But how exactly does it work?
First of all, its OO-Ber, not YOU-Ber and its changing the way the world travels. It’s as easy as 1-2-3.
- Download the app to your phone. Its available for both Apple and Android smart phones.
- Create an account on the app. You will be asked for your phone number, login data, and credit card information for future payment of rides.
- Type in the name of your destination or address and “Request UberX.” A picture of your driver, their car, and a description of the make and model picking you up will be sent to you instantly! Cars typically arrive at your home or location sometime within 5-20 minutes. Then you’re on your way!
Uber means transportation for people, especially seniors
For many people – regardless of age – this means owning a car can be a dilemma of the past. Imagine a life without car payments, insurance hassles, or frequent gas station stops. Just like having a lifestyle of maintenance-free living in a retirement community, getting around with Uber makes transportation hassle-free, too.
There are times when aging adults in senior communities want to participate in community activities and events that are not included in the schedule of activities for the retirement community. With Uber, getting there is not a problem.
This is especially true for seniors who no longer drive. Uber provides a new transportation possibility at home and also on vacation, too. Because Uber is so widespread nationally, and even in other countries, seniors who are avid travelers can use it instead of renting a car while away.
Uber’s concern for your safety
As far as Uber’s safety concern for their customers, Uber’s website claims, “Passengers get to rate their drivers and overall experience after each ride, and drivers get to rate the passenger after each ride.” With their reputation at stake, Uber drivers are often compelled to be on their best behavior. Drivers must also pass other criteria, including having at least 3 years driving experience, an extensive background check, and possession of valid, in-state insurance and driver’s license.
Uber drivers work based on their own hour preferences and availability. With competitive pay rates, Uber has employed more than 160,000 local drivers in 586 locations. So, whether you’re looking to get a ride to the mall, movies, or dinner or possibly even a part time job as a driver, Uber could be the answer for you. All you have to do is get out there and request it!
