Active Older Adults Are Streaming Movies These Days
As active older adults in a community like Westminster Village, you have a full calendar of things to do during your evenings and weekends, but sometimes it’s just nice to sit at home and watch a good movie. And, it’s easier than ever to do so with the thousands of choices that streaming video offers.
Movie watching has changed for everyone including seniors
You probably remember when the only way to watch a movie was to go to a theatre or to a drive-in. If you were lucky, you went on the premier weekend to see a showing before everyone else saw it. But, the only way to own that movie was to purchase a 16-mm copy of the film. They were expensive and big. Organizations like churches and schools might own some, but no one had movies to show at home. Then someone came up with the idea to allow anyone to own a major motion picture to show at home – the VHS tape, the DVD, and now there’s movie and TV streaming.
Active older adults can now stream your media over the internet
Media streaming is audio or video that is sent as a file over the internet. Live streaming video is watching a live event as it happens on the internet like a sporting event or a concert. But, you can also watch “on demand” video which means it’s recorded and uploaded to some kind of service.
In order to watch streaming video, you need a TV that has an HDMI port, which is a device that hosts the apps that you purchase, and high-speed internet.
Seniors can choose from a variety of services.
Netflix is probably the most recognizable streaming service because it was one of the first to stream TV shows and movies in this way. But, there are other services/apps that do the same thing. Most of the apps or services cost a small monthly fee. A very few, like Crackle, are even free. Once you’ve paid your monthly fee, you can then watch any TV show or movie as often as you like, whenever you like.
The following list is not exhaustive of what’s available, but maybe a start for the first-time streamer.
- YouTube TV
- CBS All Access
- Acorn TV
Each service has hundreds of TV shows and movies, new and classic, both foreign and domestic. You can watch an entire season or multiple seasons of any TV show. You might miss a new TV show on a network, but pick it up on Netflix during the summer. Services like Acorn TV, the English TV app, shows mostly TV from other countries. Some, but not all, also produce their own original content. Netflix has its own TV shows and movies that you won’t see anywhere else.
Some cable or satellite companies include Netflix in their services, but in most cases, you will also need a separate device to view your apps. Apple TV, Amazon Fire, and the Roku are all devices that you can purchase to plug into your TV. You can also purchase a blue ray player that will allow you to access your purchased apps.
There can be some lag time with some services or apps. Many new TV shows won’t be on their list for 6 months to a year. You’ll be able to catch up on everything that you missed, but will then have to wait for the newest episodes.
So, pop the popcorn and get comfortable. Tune into a classic or new movie. Watch all five seasons of Downton Abbey. Or pick something else from the hundreds of titles that are right there for you any time of the day or night available for viewing in the comfort of your own home.
