This Gives Retired Knitters a Reason to Click Those Needles!
Calling all knitters! People who knit are a special breed. It’s often not the final product that is what compels them to knit – no, it’s the knitting!
But after years of knitting, family and friends have gotten every sweater, hat, scarf, blanket and pair of socks they could ever need. If that describes your dilemma, I have a grand solution.
I recently met a woman named Joanna Dervisoglu. She actually lives in the UK. I was touched by her story. She is introducing Knitted Knockers to Great Britain! She has created a registered charity and is working diligently to spread the word, energize knitters to join her cause and to share free knitted knockers with those who would want them across the pond.
What’s a knitted knocker?
Simply, they are soft, comfortable, knit prosthetics for breast cancer survivors. Yes – knitted prosthetics. You see, not every woman who undergoes a mastectomy is a candidate for reconstruction and even those who are do not start the process right away. A Washington woman named Barbara Demorest turned her experience with breast cancer into knittedknockers.org – and has been a positive shining light for women during one of the darkest and toughest times of their lives. You can hear her story on the knittedknockers.org website here.
How can senior knitters participate?
We know from all the time and efforts donated by Westminster Village residents that retirees look for ways to make the world a better place. They volunteer many, many hours and give from the heart to many worthy causes.
We also know how creative and active seniors are today. So letting seniors who love to knit know about knitted knockers could result in one of the most productive partnerships ever! One of the best things is that you don’t even have to get out of your jammies or leave the comfort of your retirement nest during cold winter days!
The patterns can be found on the website and are free to anyone who wishes to knit some. There are even videos to demonstrate the stitches. The site also explains how to get them into your community or where to mail them if you want to send them to the organization for distribution.
Groups like knitting circles are always popping up in places like Westminster Village retirement community. News of activities like Knitted Knockers spreads quickly through exercise and wellness classes, ongoing classes and activities and for sure over meals in the dining rooms.
So all you knitters who need a reason to knit, here you go. Combine something you love to do with something someone would love to have and make everyone happy!
